Installing Ubuntu 5.04 on Dell Latitude D410

Basic Installation of Ubuntu 5.04:

Why to use Ubuntu 5.04
I tried installing Debian 3.1 initially, but could not proceed - the disk controller, video, networking and sound were all unsupported by Debian 3.1's 2.6.8 or 2.4.27 kernels. Similarly, Fedora 3 was unable to find the hard disk.

Installing
No special action is required, installation is mostly automated (other than some initial steps, and user account creation)
Post-Install modifications/tweaks
- Suspend-to-RAM requires removal of a comment in /etc/default/acpi-support, such that "ACPI_SLEEP=true"
- VGA out does not function correctly on i810 and subsequent Intel graphics solutions. the package "i810switch" provides some output functionality, but with a massively degraded image quality. "i855-crt" provides improved image quality, but does not support i915, without use of a patch I wrote for the purpose here. To use the patch, open a root terminal, and run:
  - apt-get build-dep i855-crt
  - apt-get source i855-crt
  - apt-get install fakeroot
  - cd i855-crt-0.4
  - patch -p0 < /path/to/patch.diff
  - dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -us -uc
  - dpkg -i ../i855-crt_0.4ubuntu1_i386.deb
  Subsequently, run "/usr/sbin/i855crt swcursor on 1024x768@70" as root.

Getting Suspend-to-Disk to operate correctly
During installation, assign a swap file of at least the size of the RAM - Suspend-to-Disk will function fine subsequently
