Hi to everybody, I'm approching linux for the first time and I start with Knoppix live.
My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite 1800-314.
When the cd runs everything is ok until the procedure arrives at: Scanning for Harddisk partitions and creating /etc/fstab . . . At that point it stops working and there is no way to continue in the booting.
This happens when there is winXp on a partition, but also if no operative system is installed on the laptop. It's the same even if I leave the partition completely empty but formatted in NTFS or FAT or FAT32, or linux-formatted (with a swap partition, a boot partition in ext2 and a root one in ext3).
I tryied to launch Knoppix with this boot: Knoppix lang=it noapic, but nothing.
Every live distro does the same (linspire, dsl ecc.).
If I try to install a distro not live (ubuntu, suse 10, mandrake 9.2) the process goes ok.

Hope somebody could help me.
Sorry for my English, I tryied to be undrestandable :-)

On the GRUB screen, try adding a boot option. Normally the cursor will be at a place on the bootup screen where you can add the option, maybe after vga=771 or vga=791

try acpi=off
or noapic
